A Developer's Guide to the VIN Validator & Decoder
The VIN Validator & Decoder is a tool for developers, automotive enthusiasts, and anyone who needs to verify a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). It checks the 17-digit number for correctness using the standard checksum algorithm and decodes its various components.
Features
- Checksum Validation: The tool verifies that the 9th character of the VIN (the check digit) is correct based on a calculation performed on the other characters, ensuring the VIN is not a typo.
- Format Validation: Ensures the VIN is 17 characters long and does not contain the invalid letters I, O, or Q.
- VIN Decoding: For a valid VIN, the tool breaks it down into its standard components:
- WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier): The first three characters, which identify the manufacturer.
- VDS (Vehicle Descriptor Section): The next five characters, which describe the vehicle's attributes.
- Model Year: Decodes the 10th character to determine the vehicle's model year.
- Plant Code: The 11th character, which indicates the manufacturing plant.
- Sequential Number: The last six digits, which are the unique serial number for the vehicle.
- Manufacturer Lookup: Provides the name of the manufacturer based on the WMI.
How to Use
- Enter the VIN: Type or paste the 17-digit VIN into the input field. The input is automatically converted to uppercase.
- Click Validate & Decode: Press the button to perform the validation.
- Review the Results:
- An alert will first tell you if the VIN is Valid or Invalid. If invalid, it will provide a reason (e.g., incorrect length or failed checksum).
- If the VIN is valid, a set of cards will appear displaying the decoded information about the manufacturer, model year, and other components.
