A Developer's Guide to the Image Metadata Extractor

The Image Metadata Extractor is a tool for photographers, developers, and curious users who want to see the "hidden" data stored within a JPEG image file. It parses the EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data that digital cameras and smartphones embed in photos.

Features

  • EXIF Data Parsing: Extracts a wide range of metadata, including:
    • Image Info: The make and model of the camera or phone used.
    • Camera Settings: Details like aperture (F-number), exposure time, ISO speed, and focal length.
    • GPS Data: If the image contains location data, it will display the latitude and longitude, and provide a direct link to view the location on a map.
    • Timestamps: See the exact date and time the photo was taken.
  • Client-Side Processing: Your image is never uploaded to a server. All metadata is extracted locally in your browser, ensuring your privacy.
  • Image Preview: See a preview of the image you uploaded alongside its data.
  • Organized Display: The extracted metadata is neatly organized into categories (Image Info, Camera Settings, GPS) for easy reading.

How to Use

  1. Select a JPEG File: Click the "Select JPEG Image" button. This tool is specifically designed for JPEG files, as they are the most common format for containing rich EXIF data.
  2. View the Metadata: If the image contains EXIF data, it will be instantly parsed and displayed in tables on the right.
  3. Explore the Data:
    • Check the Camera Settings to learn about the technical details of how the photo was taken.
    • If GPS Data is present, click the "View on Map" link to see where the photo was taken.
